Research Proposal: I have been studying sanitary, environmental and technical barriers to trade since 1997 and I currently lead a Discussion group of undergraduation and graduation students at Cepea an applied economics research center from ESALQ – University of Sao Paulo. There are four approaches I propose on my research project for the next years: 1) a conceptual research, focused on identifying non-tariff barriers and analyzing criteria on legitimacy and economic restrictions; 2) organization of a database on sanitary, technical and environment measures, as a source for econometric and trade policy studies; 3) a mathematical approach to analyze using the econometric, time series and cost-benefits models applied to measure barriers impacts; and 4) finally, to employ all the information generated in the previous steps to give support to public policies and private sector decisions, particularly in developing countries. Regardless the relevance of this subject, there are still a few academic people working on trade and economics related to these issues in Brazil. So, I intend to keep joining students for the Discussion group and involve them in applied research projects, expanding the interest on this matter.
