Research Proposal:
Transaction Costs and Its Impact on China's Domestic Agricultural Trade.
Although impacts of China's international trade were well documented, few rigorous studies on China's domestic agricultural trade exist. A primary factor in understanding domestic trade flows is transaction cost. The overall goal of this study is to develop a detailed understanding of transaction cost in China's domestic agricultural trade and to empirically quantify the impact of trade cost on interregional trade in China. To achieve this goal, statistical data, such as regional market prices and transportation costs, and first-hand survey data from six counties will be collected. Industrial Organization theories and econometric models will be employed to analyze components, magnitudes, and significant determinants of both horizontal and vertical agricultural trade cost. In the end, a well established multi-regional equilibrium model will be trimmed to qualify impact of trade cost on China's domestic agricultural trade and regional agricultural development, based on which constructive policy suggestions will be raised.
